1989. Manchester. The year that everything changed from black and white into technicolour. A frenzy of drugs, beats and bucket hats. Illegal raves. Acid parties. Just jumping up and down in a field and throwing two fingers to Thatcher…
Do you remember it? Because we don’t. We weren’t even born.
But Ian was. And Ian does remember.
We’ve got fuck all now (Ian says).
So, we’re going back to 1989.
We’re going to neck a brown biscuit.
We’re going to get off our peanut.
We’re going to bounce around like idiots.
And Ian’s going to show us how.
We’re mad fer it.
And you will be too.
Let’s party.
WE ARE IAN was about Dora's step-dad Ian, who was in his early 20s (our age when we made the show) in the late 80s and early 90s Acid House scene in Manchester.
The show is made from recordings of conversations we’ve had with Ian and he is represented on stage as a pulsating lightbulb, Ian's godlike voice speaks to us, and guides is through the ups and downs of what it was like back in the day and is scored by Ian's favourite tracks from the era. Using a messy, multimedia mish-mash of clowning, dance and lip-synching - we try and recreate the party and (the comedown). The show's about youth culture and politics. it's about our generation and the last. it's about class and opportunity. it's about dancing through the shit. but mainly, it's about Ian.
